Osculating Lattice Paths and Alternating Sign Matrices

Osculating lattice paths are sets of directed lattice paths which are not allowed to cross or have common edges, but are allowed common vertices. We derive a constant term formula for the number of such lattice paths. The formula is obtained by solving a set of simultaneous recurrence relations. Alternating sign matrices are in simple bijection with a subset of osculating lattice paths. This le...

Symmetric matrices, Catalan paths, and correlations

Kenyon and Pemantle (2014) gave a formula for the entries of a square matrix in terms of connected principal and almost-principal minors. Each entry is an explicit Laurent polynomial whose terms are the weights of domino tilings of a half Aztec diamond. They conjectured an analogue of this parametrization for symmetric matrices, where the Laurent monomials are indexed by Catalan paths. In this ...

Gcd Matrices, Posets, and Nonintersecting Paths

We show that with any finite partially ordered set, P , one can associate a matrix whose determinant factors nicely. As corollaries, we obtain a number of results in the literature about GCD matrices and their relatives. Our main theorem is proved combinatorially using nonintersecting paths in a directed graph.

Intricacies of quantum computational paths

Graph search represents a cornerstone in computer science and is employed when the best algorithmic solution to a problem consists in performing an analysis of a search space representing computational possibilities. Typically, in such problems it is crucial to determine the sequence of transitions performed that led to certain states. In this work we discuss how to adapt generic quantum search...

Quantum Paths by Continuous Diagonalization of the Density Operator

In this short note we show that for a Markovian open quantum system it is always possible to construct a unique set of perfectly consistent Schmidt paths, supporting quasi-classicality. Our Schmidt process, elaborated several years ago, is the ∆t → 0 limit of the Schmidt chain constructed very recently by Paz and Zurek.
